What is Laughter Yoga?

Laughter yoga was coined by a doctor from India named Madan Kataria, aka “The Laughter Guru,” based on science that shows laughter is healthy. The body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter, says Dr. Kataria, so you enjoy the same physiological and psychological benefits — such as a reduction in blood pressure, a drop in stress levels and a more positive outlook on life — from both kinds. “What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul,” reads an old Yiddish proverb.

Laughter Yoga is not a comedy or entertainment, It is an exercise program. It doesn’t rely on jokes or sense of humour.  Laughter Yoga is an exercise program initiated with intentional yet unconditional laughter  which soon turns into real and contagious laughter by looking at each other in a playful group setting. You can try with your family members, workplace colleagues, children, elderly  or with anyone else.  Even practicing alone with willingness the fake laughter turns into  genuine laughter without involving cognitive process. You can fake it until you make it.

Research and scientific studies have shown  that our body can not differentiate between real laughter and intentional laughter. The simulated laughter involves similar  cardiovascular and respiratory processes that are involved in the spontaneous laughter. You get the same health benefits.
